Here we have a 3" scale Wallace & Stevens 'Simplicity' steam roller. This is the first one of these little fellas that we've had come through, and steam rollers in general are pretty rare in model form, so it's nice to get this one into the works. Nicely made and free running, you can see in the photographs that the hand pump is currently not fitted,..... it will be by the time it leaves the works here.
Cosmetically she's a little tired, the paintwork is serviceable but plain and a little chipped here and there. As with the full size prototype, there isn't a lot of room on the actual footplate of the engine, so many of the fittings are on the outside of the engine it's self rather than in the way of where the driver would stand. Fitted with an injector, a crank shaft pump and bypass valve mounted on the right hand side of the barrel, as well as the aforementioned hand pump which fits neatly into the tool box on the belly tank. The gauge glass is huge, and you can see it mounted between the cylinder block and boiler again on the right hand side of the barrel. Lubrication is mechanical and visible on top of the motion. Steering on these rollers was by a rather elegant worm and wheel crank over the front rolls, a nice solution that eliminates the vague nature that you sometimes get through the more typical chain steering.
The boiler is copper, and as always she can be given a full fresh 4 year hydraulic and fresh steam test so she is ready to play.
